Standardization to synthetic Biogel® surgical gloves can reduce clinical risks and related costs

The University of Rochester Medical Center launched a LEAN project initiated by the FDA ban on powdered gloves to address concerns about case breakdown numbers and staff exposure to latex. Following a surgical glove trial and extensive staff education on latex allergy, the OR consolidated to Biogel gloves. Surgical glove SKUs decreased from 13 to 3, room tear downs caused by unrecognized latex allergy patients decreased to zero with related cost savings estimated at over $43,000 per year. In addition, 111 cubic feet of storage space was regained in the center core.

High-quality gloves play a critical role in SSI prevention

Minimizing glove failure is one way to protect both providers and patients, as well as a hospital’s bottom line. A cost-benefit analysis was able to quantify the value of more durable, higher-quality surgical Biogel gloves. Although higher-quality gloves might initially cost more, savings achieved by averting just one SSI would offset the cost of a full year’s supply of Biogel gloves.
